Some kids collect baseball cards. I collect words.
Hi! I'm the Word Whiz. I'm in middle school, just like you,
and I'm going to turn you into a Word Whiz -- just like me!
I'm going to introduce you to more than 600 words middle school
students need to know for New York State tests, in class,
and when doing homework. Important words for important subjects,
such as:
English Language Arts: paraphrase, alliteration, genre, metaphor,
symbolism Math: convert, probability, hypotenuse, median,
variable Social Studies: partisan, inalienable, imperialism,
ratify, consequences Science: buoyant, neutron, friction,
oxidation, synthesis
I've also included words commonly used in questions on New
York State tests, including approximate, equivalent, and opinion.
My WhizWord lists have kid-friendly definitions and sample
sentences, plus synonyms, antonyms, related words and meanings,
and examples of how the words are used on the New York State
tests.
I've also included all this extra cool stuff:
* WhizTips: helpful hints on how to learn words and ace tests.
* WhizQuizzes: mini-quizzes to help cement the words in your
brain. * WhizFacts: general good stuff to know about these
words.
And that's not all! I also made up some really fun practice
exercises. They will help you nail down these vocabulary words
by relating them to things we're interested in, like TV, movies,
sports, and music.
The words in this book will come in handy for the rest of
your life. So let's get started!

I LOVE this series. It has been useful as reteach pages as
well as make-up work assignments for absent students. The
top of the page teaches the skill and there are plenty of
practice problems without overwhelming the student. --This

I am a middle school math teacher who found these books to
be very helpful. I am always on the lookout for workbooks
that provide extra help on basic skills. These books fit the
bill. Some answers are incorrect, but the majority can be
checked with a calculator. These books provide good reteaching
concepts as well as a good variety of sample problems. If
you are looking to help your child in math, I would suggest
these books. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

This book is wonderful. My 12 year old son wanted to challenge
himself over the summer with math problems and this was exactly
the book he wanted. This book has pages to help him with the
SAT's and other math tests he will encounter over the next
couple of years in school. Highly recommend.
